Your deposit deadline, by state
Pick your state. Enter the day you moved out and what was held back. See the date your state's statute counts to, and read the statute's own words.
The full Deposit Back kit — $19
One payment. It builds on the free check above, using the same numbers you entered.
- A filled-in letter you can print or save as PDF. It gives your dates and forwarding address, cites your state's statute by section, quotes its deadline wording, asks for your deposit or an itemized statement, and sets a reply-by date. It makes no claims about penalties
- A move-out photo-log checklist, with notes from your state's statute where we've read them
- A dated timeline of what to do if the landlord ignores the letter, with your state court's self-help page where we've verified one
Instant digital access, checkout by Stripe. All sales are final, so try the free deadline check above first. The kit is a template, not legal advice.
Your Deposit Back kit
A template and an organizer. It is not legal advice. State law varies and laws change. Before you send anything, talk to a local tenant-rights organization or an attorney.
1. Your letter
Fill in the details. The letter updates as you type. Anything still in [brackets] is highlighted, and it is still yours to check before you send.
2. Move-out photo log
Tick items off as you go. The ticks stay on this device if you chose "Remember my entries".
3. If your landlord ignores the letter
Suggested pacing, counted from today. These are generic steps, not legal deadlines. Your state's real deadlines for suing can differ, so ask a local tenant-rights organization or an attorney how long you have.
How the dates work
- We count calendar days. Day 1 is the day after the date the statute counts from: your move-out date, or, in states that count from the later of two events, the later of your move-out date and your lease-end date.
- Deadlines that fall on a weekend or holiday may move to the next business day. Texas and New York say so in their statutes and we apply that to weekends. We don't know holidays. We only say a deadline has passed when it is clearly past, and otherwise say it may have passed.
- Each state's rule, its quoted statute wording and the official page we read it on appear under your result, with the date we checked.
- States differ on what starts the clock, what counts as sending, and what the landlord must send. We show what the statute says and nothing more.
- Your lease, a city ordinance or a special kind of housing (for example subsidized housing) may change the rules. We can't see those.
- Everything runs in your browser. We don't see or store your numbers, names or addresses.
Questions
What do I get for $19?
A letter filled in with your details, your dates and your state's statute wording, a move-out photo-log checklist, and a dated timeline for what to do if the landlord ignores the letter. The free deadline check above runs the same engine on the same numbers, so you can see exactly what it does before you pay. The kit works for the states we have checked.
Can I get a refund?
All sales are final because the kit unlocks instantly. If you were charged twice, or the kit won't open after you've used the resend link below, email us and we'll refund it.
I paid but lost the kit, or I'm on another device.
Can you tell me what to do?
No. Deposit Back is a tool, not advice. It counts days, shows what a statute says and fills in a template. Whether to send a letter, sue or settle is your call. For help with your situation, talk to a local tenant-rights organization or an attorney.
Where do the dates come from, and why isn't my state listed?
Each deadline was read from the state's official statute page and is shown with its source link and the date we checked it. We only list a state after verifying it that way. For other states the tool says so and points you to your state's official tenant guide. We don't guess.
What are the limits of the tool?
It covers the state statute's deadline for returning a deposit or sending an itemized list, and, as a quotation, the statute's own sentences about what follows a missed deadline. We never calculate a penalty or a dollar figure from them. It doesn't cover local ordinances, interest on deposits, last month's rent, pet or other fees, or whether any particular deduction is fair. Whether a statute's consequences apply depends on facts this tool can't check; a local tenant-rights group or an attorney can tell you.
